Home Learning

The summary below provides you with an overview of home learning for key stages 3 and 4, what your child will need to do and how you can support them.

What are the aims of setting homework?

  • Reinforce understanding and mastery of classroom lessons
  • Encourage independent learning
  • Develop good study habits
  • Encourage time management skills
  • Foster responsibility and accountability
  • Develop critical thinking skills

Homework Club Schedule

To provide targeted support, different subject departments will now be running optional Homework Clubs every day during lunchtime, after school, or both.

These sessions will be supervised by subject-specialist teachers and are an excellent opportunity for pupils to:

  • Receive support and guidance with their current homework tasks.
  • Ask questions and clarify concepts ahead of the due date.
  • Access department resources and quiet study space.

We strongly encourage pupils to proactively attend these sessions if they anticipate needing help with their homework. The clubs are open to all pupils.

What day will my child get homework for each subject?

We would also like to remind all parents of the importance of timely homework completion. Our policy is as follows:

  • Failure to complete homework by the stated due date will result in a compulsory 60-minute Homework Clinic sanction the following day. This supervised session is dedicated to completing the missed work.
  • Failure to attend the compulsory Homework Clinic will lead to a more serious sanction, specifically an Internal Exclusion Room (IER) visit.

These measures ensure that missed work is always caught up quickly and that all pupils maintain the consistent work ethic required for academic success.

Thank you, as always, for your continued and invaluable support in encouraging your child’s learning. By working together, we can ensure every pupil at Leigh Academy Strood achieves their full potential.

If you have any questions regarding these changes, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Head of Year.

Where is the homework set?

Instructions from the teacher are placed weekly in the Google classrooms. Teachers will ensure that the students can access these using their Chromebooks.

  1. Students are expected to complete all assigned homework on time.
  2. Students should seek assistance from their teachers or attend the lunch time homework club when they encounter difficulties before the deadline for submission of homework.
  3. Students must submit their own work.
  4. Students who miss homework will be required to make up any missed work.
  5. Students who do not complete homework on time may receive a sanction.

There are a number of ways that you can support your son/daughter at home:

  • At the start of term they may need help with developing a routine once they come home from school.
Part of developing a routine will be to decide where to complete the homework; somewhere they can focus but also ask for help from a parent/carer/sibling if needed.
  • Monitoring the Google Classrooms for what homework has been set occasionally, maybe once or twice a week, would also be supportive.
  • Praise for their effort and completion of work to a high standard also helps students to continue with the weekly homework routine.
  • Please check MCAS for to check for after school homework sessions or referrals to the homework clinic.
