Religious education
Curriculum Intent
The Religious Education curriculum at Strood Academy ensures students possess the knowledge and skills that pupils need in order to take advantage of opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. The curriculum explores key religious beliefs and practices as well as providing students the opportunity to reflect upon their own beliefs and positions. Students therefore are well prepared to navigate the wider world and become successful global citizens.
Curriculum Journey
Throughout Personal Development lessons in Years 7-9, students have been learning about and reflecting upon religious beliefs in the six main world religions. They have investigated beliefs about God, holy texts, places of worship and religious observances and practices in order to build an understanding of the similarities and differences between these traditions. As a result, students embarking upon the GCSE course possess the foundational knowledge in Christianity and Islam to allow them to better understand the diversity between communities and denominations within Christianity and Islam. Knowing why and how Muslims conduct daily prayers in Key Stage 3 prepares students for a more detailed understanding of the centrality of the Five Pillars and the influence this has upon Muslims daily lives. Using the themes studied in the Eduqas GCSE course allows us to introduce some of these ethical discussions throughout Key Stage 3 and provides a space for students to discuss their own beliefs in relation to these.
