At Strood academy students in year 7-9 receive a 3 year Key Stage 3 curriculum that is broad and balanced with a variety of subjects that follow the National Curriculum. Our key stage 3 curriculum is delivered through the framework of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP). The MYP has been designed as a coherent and comprehensive curriculum framework that provides academic challenge and also develops the life skills of students.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
International Baccalaureate Mission Statement
As part of Leigh Academies Trust we believe the MYP will provide us with a shared vision of Key Stage 3 and help us deliver an outstanding educational experience for all our pupils.
The MYP aims to develop active learners and internationally minded young people who can empathise with others and pursue lives of purpose and meaning. The programme empowers students to inquire into a wide range of issues and ideas of significance locally, nationally and globally. The result is young people who are creative, critical and reflective thinkers.
We provide a challenging classroom environment, which encourages participation, curiosity and enquiry building on the ethos of the Middle Years Programme. Our teachers think carefully on how best to design and teach our curriculum so that new knowledge is built upon old knowledge so that learning builds over time.
The MYP curriculum is organised around a rigorous and thorough study of eight traditional subject areas, including Language and Literature (English) and Language Acquisition (French or Spanish).
The MYP comprises eight subject groups:
- Language acquisition (French or Spanish)
- Language and literature
- Individuals and societies (History, Geography and World Views)
- Arts (Art, Music, Drama, Dance)
- Physical and health education (PE, and Relationship and Sex Education)
- Design (Computing and Technology)
