Sports Day – Wednesday 14 July

Dear Parent/Carers

We are delighted to inform you that Strood Academy will be facilitating it’s annual sports day here at the Academy on Wednesday 14 July 2021.  We are determined to finish the academic year on a high, and provide the students with something extremely positive to look forward to.

All students at the Academy will rotate around the activities below, alongside their Form Tutors. We have designed a new and improved sports day that is different from the traditional, purely athletic competition to ensure participation and engagement from all students.

  • Fun relays – For example: egg and spoon race, basketball skills challenge
  • Athletics  – For example: sack racing, welly throwing, 30m dash
  • Team games – For example: dodgeball, bench ball, tug of war, newcomb ball
  • Inflatable fun – We have four 70ft inflatable obstacle courses that all students will be able to experience.

The students will operate on a carousel within their tutor groups and take turns on the various activities to allow rest breaks.  During their lunchtime, students will be advised to head towards the shaded areas if the weather is particularly hot.

As well as the fun activities planned, there will be an ice cream van here on site to provide all students with an ice cream paid for by Strood Academy.  The canteen will also be providing a range of both hot and cold food options to purchase.  Students can use the usual ParentPay card system for this.

Students will need to arrive at school wearing the correct PE kit; white polo top/Strood Academy logo top, black shorts/joggers.  In the event of participants not wearing the correct kit they will need to borrow from the PE department.  Students are not to wear any branded or logo clothing.  In the event of inclement weather, students should also bring an extra top, which should be either the Strood Academy blue sweatshirt/rugby top, or a black sweatshirt.  Students must wear trainers, and the usual standards seen in PE will be expected, such as no jewellery to be worn and t-shirts are at an appropriate length.

As students will be outside for the day and will be moving around to different practical activities can we please ask that students refrain from bringing valuables to school.  Strood Academy cannot accept any responsibility for loss or damage to valuables such as mobile phones and earphones.

Due to being outside for the majority of the day students will need to ensure they are comfortable and come prepared and therefore bring:

  • A packed lunch (unless they are buying from the canteen.  Students entitled to free school meals will be provided with these)
  • Hat and suntan lotion
  • Plenty of water to last throughout the day (there will also be water stations available at each activity)

Students will follow their usual morning routine in terms of line ups and registering and the activities will commence from 9.15am.  Students will be dismissed at 2pm, the usual time for a Wednesday.

Unfortunately, due to safeguarding issues parents/carers will not be able to attend the event.

In line with current government guidelines, students will remain in year group bubbles, rotating around the areas. Strict sanitising of equipment and hand sanitising will take place throughout the day as students move between activities.

In the event of severely inclement weather, it is possible that sports day will be cancelled, and the normal academy day will be followed.

We are looking forward to an exciting day that engages all students, with participation for all.  As with previous sports days, we know that students will not only perform brilliantly in the events, but also actively support and encourage their peers, demonstrating the ethos and spirit of Strood Academy.

Kind regards
