Personal Development

Strood Academy Letter image

Dear Parents/Carers

In our ongoing commitment to preparing our students for life beyond Strood Academy, I am informing you about the topics being covered in Personal Development this term. The primary goal of Personal Development is to support the holistic growth of pupils, by focusing on a wide cross-section of skills.

Personal Development lessons, scheduled on a Wednesday Period 5, adhere to the recommended PSHE/RSE curriculum provided by the PSHE Association. This curriculum is structured around three main themes: Health and Wellbeing, Relationships, and Living in the Wider World.

Throughout Module 3, each year group will follow a distinct scheme of work tailored to their developmental stage:

  • Year 7: Health – Addictive substances and habits
  • Year 8: Health – Mental health, physical health and healthy lifestyles
  • Year 9: Health – Consent and the law, risk and peer pressure
  • Year 10: Health – High Performance Foundation Programme
  • Year 11: GCSE – Exam study sessions
  • Year 12: Enrichment Programme
  • Year 13: Enrichment Programme

In addition to our personal development lessons we are continuing to show our commitment to careers education. This module we have a range of careers assemblies for all year groups delivered by representatives from the Department of Work and Pensions. They will cover the link between school and life, apprenticeships and employability skills. Also remember that you can explore Unifrog, our careers information resource with your child at Unifrog.org/signin .

Finally, we are more than willing to provide additional information about the various aspects of our Personal Development curriculum. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact your child’s college via the Academy’s college email addresses.

Yours faithfully
Mr M. Williams
Assistant Principal, Personal Development Lead
