Dear Parent/Carer

We are excited to offer your child the opportunity to attend a session that we have been invited to, alongside other schools, at Canterbury Christ Church University’s Gillingham Campus on Tuesday 10th December 2024 at their medical simulation suite in the Rowan Williams building.

The session is taking place between 1pm and 3pm, travelling by minibus, leaving the academy at around 12:15pm and returning before 4pm depending on traffic. The simulation suite is located in the Rowan Williams building where students will stay between arrival and departure. There will be no cost of the session or travel but there is a cafe located in the building that students are welcome to bring money to purchase refreshments from. Students will be supervised by Miss Thorpe and Mr China throughout the visit.

The university’s third year Adult Nursing students are creating and delivering a teaching session as one of the last parts of their qualifications. The students will have the opportunity to participate in a carousel of hands on interactive activities in the Simulation Suite. They will have the opportunity to learn about:

  • Manual blood pressure
  • Risk assessments,
  • Fluid balance charts,
  • Vital signs,
  • Urinalysis,
  • Medicines management(calculations and administration),
  • Medical abbreviations,
  • Patient assessment

While at the university, the students will also have the opportunity to see the facilities in the Rowan Williams building and the Health and Care Engagement Team will be on hand to answer questions about careers and any of the other courses they offer.

This is a unique opportunity for our students to immerse themselves in the university’s state of the art training facilities and the opportunity to not only be taught some basic skills from nearly qualified nurses but also ask questions about the profession and university life.

If you are happy for your child to attend this visit please complete the consent form on MCAS as soon as possible or by 6th December 2024, as we have a limited amount of spaces and we may be able to offer the place to another student.

If you have any questions, please contact Miss Thorpe by email: kiah.metcalf-thorpe@stroodacademy.org

Kind Regards
Miss K Metcalf-Thorpe | Teacher of Social Sciences/ T-Level Coordinator
